For most situations, common sense will tell you which foods to avoid. It’s best to steer clear of
hard foods, sticky foods and foods high in sugar. Hard foods can break or damage your wires and
brackets. Sticky foods can get caught between brackets and wires. And sugary foods can cause
tooth decay and related problems. Nail biting and chewing on foreign objects, such as pens or
pencils should also be avoided.
Examples of sticky foods to avoid include:
-- Gum (sugar free gum is acceptable, but bubble gum and gumballs are no-no’s.)
-- Licorice
-- Sugar Daddies™
-- Toffee
-- Tootsie Rolls™
-- Caramels
-- Starburst Fruit Chews™
Examples of hard foods to avoid include:
-- Ice
-- Nuts
-- Hard taco shells
-- Bagels
-- French bread crust/rolls
-- Corn on the cob
-- Apples and carrots (unless cut into small pieces)
-- Chips
-- Jolly Rancher™  candies
-- Pizza crust
Foods to avoid.
Minimize foods high in sugar, such as:
-- cake
-- ice cream
-- cookies
-- pie
-- candy
It’s best to consume the following only once per day:
-- soda
-- sweetened tea
-- Gatorade™
-- Kool-aid™
-- other drinks with sugar
It’s also important to regularly check your braces for bent or loose wires and brackets.
